28 Aug Hanami is a Japanese tradition
Hanami is the Japanese traditional custom of enjoying the transient beauty of flowers. People celebrate the flowering of cherry blossoms by moving outdoors – holding hanami picnics under the trees. These gatherings can be outings with family members and friends. With this inspiration, I created Hanami.
Hanami is inspired by the romance of Eastern gardens. The depth of the background pearlesque resin is particularly enhanced by the delicate petal texture which is the unique feature of my cherry blossom series. I hand cut individual petals from a special material and then it’s a laborious process of placing and overlapping onto the resin surface while its curing. Then the petal material is carefully removed leaving its impression on the resins surface. It is a self taught technique discovered through experimentation. I feel the striking deep red of the foreground flowers adds a romance to this piece.
